Commercialization
Innovative Genomics Institute
Founded in 2015 by Nobel laureate Jennifer Doudna, the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) uses genome engineering to solve problems in health, climate and sustainable agriculture. It is a non-profit academic research partnership between UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, UC Davis and UC San Diego, with affiliates at other institutions including Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Gladstone Institutes.
IGI develops genome-editing tools to treat human disease, improve crops and create new microbe-inspired biotechnologies. Its Li Ka Shing Center for Translational Genomics includes a clinical laboratory developing diagnostic tools for CRISPR therapeutics, and IGI states that it aims to create new paradigms for commercializing genome-engineering technologies that ensure broad, equitable access. It receives funding through grants, philanthropy and industry partnerships.
