Henry Wheeler Center for Emerging & Neglected Diseases
The Henry Wheeler Center for Emerging & Neglected Diseases (CEND) works to transform UC Berkeley's research into solutions for emerging and neglected infectious diseases, with a focus on diseases that hit marginalized communities hardest. Founded through a 2008 gift from Henry H. "Sam" Wheeler, Jr., it connects more than 60 affiliated faculty across biology, chemistry, engineering, public health, economics and business.
CEND supports cross-disciplinary research collaborations, graduate fellowships and science training in low- and middle-income countries, hosts the annual CEND Symposium, and aims to accelerate the path from laboratory discovery to diagnostics, treatments and vaccines. Its programs include the Immunotherapeutics & Vaccine Research Initiative (IVRI).
